A Free Meal

One of the fun parts of the Zoo is watching all the none zoo animals eating the zoo animals food. The birds are everywhere. Sparrows, ducks, geese, crows and magpies find a free meal. Crows and Magpies like eating with the bears. Where ever there is food there will also be field mice and voles. Lots to watch if you just look past the zoo animals.

Red River Hogs

This is the fur of the Red River Hogs at the Calgary Zoo. Sometimes I find the close-up details more interesting than the larger picture. I like the red fur and the white stripe down the spine of the hog. The colour and texture were what attracted me to this image.

Feathers

These little sparrows are everywhere and many people disregard them as common birds. If you take a moment to watch them they are quite fun to watch. The fly here and there and land in the most amazing spaces. They like flying through these wire fences and when they land it is like they are landing in a picture frame.

The Barn Cat

Everyone wants to pet the horse but the best animal to pet on a farm is the barn cat. They don’t always like people but when you finally convince them to come to you they show their appreciation.

This cat has six toes. He liked being pet but when he was tired of it he simply walked into the corral with the horses where people couldn’t go. When I asked the youngest farm girl (probably five or six years old)what the cat’s name was her answer was quite simple. She said “His name is Six Toes” with a look like what else could it be.

10 Years

This is the first image that I ever posted on the internet (with a 2017 re-edit). Ten years ago today I thought I would try posting a photo every day on the internet. I thought I would see if I could do it for a year, 365 days. It would be a way to improve my photography and keep me motivated to continue creating images. That year long project kept going and ten years later with a photo every day I have posted over 3650 photos to the internet. I am not sure what I will do now. I probably will continue although I have lots of photos that I would like to sort and present into galleries. I bit of a project that I have always wanted to do but also find almost overwhelming.

I am not sure what I will do now. I probably will continue a photo a day although I have lots of photos that I would like to sort and present in a more accessible format like web galleries or maybe something else. A bit of a project that I have always wanted to do but also find almost overwhelming.

I still carry a camera with me every day but I don’t always make an image every day and that’s okay. Sometimes life gets in the way. When I do take the time, slow down and really see what is around me, what I can create with this camera, I enjoy myself. That is why I started creating images and that is why I will still continue to create images.

Raft staff and the ducks

We watched as the rafts floated down the river. The pulled into a small lagoon at the end of the trip. The “raft staff” came to help them bring the boats to the shore. As the staff moved through the water a small group of ducklings followed. It was quite fun to watch and they were quite good at getting out of the way as the boats came in. It almost appeared as if they thought they were helping.

Nuthatch

I believe this is the female Nuthatch, the mate of the Nuthatch in the image I posted last week. She is smaller in size but large in spirit. Working just as hard if not harder to create a nest in the trunk of the old crabapple tree.

Red Breasted Nuthatch

I was at my brothers place on Sunday afternoon. The snow had melted by then and the sun was out. Up in an old Crabapple tree a pair of Red Breasted Nuthatches were busy burrowing into the tree to make a nest. They would take turns going into the tree, you could hear the tapping of their beaks and then they would pop out of the hole with a beak full of wood shavings and drop them to the ground. I enjoyed listening to them chirping away as they worked.
